The Winter Boulder Series returns on Saturday 29th October when the newly refurbished Big Rock Hub fully re-opens to host Round 1! What is the WBS? The Winter Boulder Series is a fun series of informal competitions open to climbers of all ages and abilities with 4 rounds each lasting around 4 weeks and a series final on 18th March. Everyone taking part will also have the opportunity to win prizes… at the end of each round one scorecard, selected at random, and the best beta video of the round submitted on Griptonite, will each win a £20 cash prize. You don’t need to be a climbing pro to take part – the series includes problems of every grade and taking part is an awesome way to increase motivation for your climbing sessions as you try to complete as many of the competition problems as you can. Series dates. // Start / Finish / Location // R1 / 29 October / 27 November /Hub // R2 /5 December / 8 January / Bond // R3 / 9 January / 5 February / Hub // R4 / 6 February / 5 March / Bond // Final / 9 March / Hub How does it work? Rounds 1-4 will be held alternately at Hub and Bond, with each round featuring 30 problems covering all grades. You have until the end of each round to complete as many of the problems as possible. Each problem included in the series is given a number, displayed next to the starting holds, plus tags indicating the bonus (Zone) hold and the finish (Top) hold. It’s just £3.50 to enter individual rounds and all profits go to https://mkfoodbank.org.uk/. Your best 3 scores from each of the 4 rounds will be added to create your overall series score. How do I enter? Scores will be calculated using the IFSC scoring system – aim for as many Tops in as few attempts as possible, but even if you don’t get to the top, Zones count for points too! For a Top or Zone to count, you must touch the hold with both hands in a controlled manner (grazing or tapping the hold without controlling it doesn’t count). Mark your Tops, Zones and attempts on the Winter Boulder Series competition scorecard right here in the Griptonite app and your score will automatically be calculated for you. Just pay your entry for the current round at the counter to get access to the scoresheet at the start of each round. (If you’d prefer not to use a smartphone, you can still take part. Ask staff for details.) The Final. Cup Category. For all competitors. At the end of the 4 rounds, the top 4 males and 4 females with the highest overall series scores will be invited to take part in the Cup Final at Big Rock Hub on 9th March. Shield Category. For competitors with an overall series score under a pre-determined cut-off. The cut-off point has been set but will not be released publicly until Round 4 has ended. The top 4 males and 4 females with the highest scores under the cut-off point will be invited to the Shield Final also being held on the 9th March at Hub. The final will consist of a 20 bloc tour for anyone to enter and have another chance to win the raffle cash prizes. The Shield final will then take place followed by the Cup final, with the person who tops the most problems in the least attempts crowned champion for each category.
