Risks of fingerboarding

Like any training, fingerboarding carries a risk of injury. These however can be minimized by understanding the risk and through safe practice. Below points should not be considered definitive but rather a starting point for self-education:

  • Fingerboarding is generally considered a useful activity for those climbing above V3 (F6a/6a+). If you don't know anything about grades, chances are it might not be for you.
  • Fingerboarding is tough, particularly on the finger and elbow joints. It should be done in moderation and with complementary exercises.
  • Do warm-up before exercising and don't train while injured (or at least isolate the injured joints and muscles).
  • There are two ways to make fingerboarding more difficult: add weight or drop the hold size. Our recommendation is to drop the hold size as a first option. This is much more transferable to climbing. After that, start isolating finger combinations (you may need to go back up a hold size for this).

Can I fit a non-Beastmaker fingerboard?

No you can't. We designed the Motherboard to fit Beastmakers.

Is it possible to mount a 1K Beastmaker on a 2K Motherboard and vice-versa?

No. The mounting holes between the boards are very slightly different. Make sure you choose the right model.

Other options to mount the phone?

The Motherboard also includes a screw hole on the board underside to mount the phone holder.

What are the dimensions of the Motherboards?

Both 1k and 2k Motherboards have the same dimensions: 630 x 200 x 44 mm. You need approximately 20cm additional room above the board for the phone holder.

How do you charge the batteries?

The batteries are replaceable AA type. They are accessed at the back of the board (so the board needs to be unscrewed from the wall). We found batteries last around 8-12 months of typical use (about the same as bathroom scales).

How is the Motherboard different from Zlagboard?

The Zlagboard uses your phone to measure if you're putting weight on the holds and this causes a timer to start; a basic switch mechanism. Motherboard uses force sensors to measure precisely how much force you are putting on the board and also how it's distributed left vs right. We relay this information back to the phone over Bluetooth in real time. In short, the Motherboard is a far superior measuring instrument.

Can it tell a pullup from a hang?

The Grippy app has features that detect if you are hanging with a specific weight or at a % of bodyweight. We can also detect if you step off or put a foot down. We do not have a "pull-up" detection or counter feature (presently!).

Can the board register which hold you are on?

The Grippy app instructs (or asks) the user which hold they are using. In this way we can calculate bias etc. If the user doesn't tell us or uses the wrong holds then we cannot auto detect this.

Do I have to pay customs charges on shipping?

We ship from the UK and will include all the relevant commercial invoices to the courier. Some countries will incur an import duty/tariff. It's the responsibility of the customer to pay this duty if it's due. Prices on the website are EXCLUSIVE of duties and taxes for foreign exports.

Does the Motherboard come with a warranty?

Yes it does! The Motherboard has a 1 year warranty from manufacturing defects from the date of purchase — full details here.

Does the Motherboard include the Beastmaker?

No it doesn't. If you need a Beastmaker fingerboard choose the BUNDLE option.

Can I use the Motherboard for research?

Yes! The Motherboard is already being used in academic research — for example, this study into shoe size and fit.

Tools such as the hangtime-grip-connect library can be used to stream raw data.

Is there an Open API to the Motherboard?

There is an open source repository — hangtime-grip-connect — that includes a developer API to the Motherboard.

This is not an officially supported Griptonite resource and any hardware damage incurred using it is not covered by our warranty.

Are there any other apps that work with the Motherboard?
