Getting Started

The Basics

What is Griptonite?

Griptonite is the climbing app that lets you track every climb, enter competitions, compare yourself against friends and pros, and train smarter with personalised workouts and hangboard sessions.

Is it free?

Yes — the core app is completely free to download and use. Griptonite PRO is an optional upgrade that unlocks advanced route filters, personalised recommendations and enhanced route data.

Which gyms support Griptonite?

Griptonite is live at hundreds of gyms worldwide. Open the app and search for your local gym to see if it's already connected — and if it isn't, let them know!

How do I log a climb?

Tap any route in the app, hit Log, and choose your result — top, flash, project or attempt. Your logbook and grade pyramid update instantly.

Can I use Griptonite without a gym membership?

Yes. You can use the training, hangboard and personal logbook features anywhere, even without being checked in to a gym.

Overview

The App

Can I use the app if my gym doesn't subscribe?

You can download the app, but for the gym to have a profile we require them to pay a subscription and maintain their routes. Logging is therefore only available at gyms who have subscribed. If your gym is not on the list, we'd always welcome them to join — here is a link you can forward to the managers.

Is the app free?

Yes, the app is free to download. We also offer an optional PRO subscription for advanced analysis tools.

Do you do training plans?

We do not position ourselves as an authority on coaching. Some coaches do use our app to recommend routes and manage/track their students' progress — usually with a private Crew between the coach and athlete.

Is the app just for comps?

No. While we have a powerful events platform and you may encounter Griptonite for the first time at a comp, the app is primarily used for finding routes, logging climbs, and tracking your long-term progression.

Routes & Logging

Who updates the routes?

Routes are updated in real-time by your gym's professional routesetting team using our management tools.

Do I have to scan the tags?

Scanning is the fastest way, but it's optional. You can also tick off from the comfort of a sofa using the interactive gym map.

Can I update after I climb?

Yes, the map makes it simple to log your session and tick off routes after you've finished — all while off the mats.

Spray Analysis

Filming & Analysis

How long does it take to analyse?

The analysis is designed to be simple and powerful, providing clear insights within a minute or two right from your hand. Remember, if you trim the video before uploading, analysis will be slightly faster!

Can I upload to Instagram?

Yes! You can export videos with overlays directly from the app, making them easy to share on social media.

Do I need a tripod?

No. You can use your phone handheld or even propped up on a water bottle — our software can handle small camera movements and pans.

Track & Progress

Your Data

Can I export my own data?

Yes, you can export videos with Spray overlays and comparison modes to review your performance.

Can I share my data with a coach?

Yes. Our tools, like Spray, are specifically designed to help coach-client conversations by making movement patterns clear. You can also make a private Crew with your coach.

How are my strengths and weaknesses calculated?

The app identifies patterns based on your logging history, including the wall angles and hold types you successfully send versus those you find more challenging.

Workouts

How Workouts Work

How are workouts generated?

Our Workouts follow set structures designed with coaches and with a particular focus. However, the content within the structure is tailored to you personally — we take into account your strengths and weaknesses, goals, time available, and what routes in the gym you've already tried.

Do workouts take into account my focus?

Yes, recommendations are based on your climbing history and performance metrics to help you target specific areas for improvement.

Do you make training plans?

Griptonite does not position itself as a coaching authority and does not deliver structured training plans. These should always be sought from a coach and take into account past injuries, time available, targets, and more. We don't believe in the AI coach vision to replace people!

Competitions

Scoring & Rules

How does countback work?

Ties are resolved in the following hierarchical order:

Total Tops — The climber with the most tops overall wins.

Total Zones — If tops are tied, the climber with the most zones (intermediate holds) wins.

Attempts to Top — If both have the same number of tops and zones, the climber who needed fewer attempts to secure their tops wins.

Attempts to Zone — If they are still tied, the climber who needed fewer attempts to reach the zones wins.

In a comp where there are no zones or no extra points awarded for a Flash (top on the first attempt), ties are broken based on the number of attempts. If two climbers remain tied after countback, they will be reported as tied in the results table.

How do I tick during a comp?

Special thanks to one of our customers CAMP5 for putting together this excellent competitor briefing video that covers how to climb during a competition safely as well as how to use the app.
