Keep climbers coming back

Churn and retention — this is what we're here for. Griptonite exists to keep climbers coming back. Every feature, every metric, every nudge is designed to deepen engagement and reduce churn.

The Numbers

This data shows the effect Griptonite has on churn and membership purchase

Get them to fall in love with climbing

After the first two visits, it's time to fall in love with climbing! Our platform:

  • Educates about new terminology
  • Makes route choice and finding easy
  • Reminds them of the progress they are making
  • Gives them suggestions for their next visit

The Real Cost

Churn (and why it really matters)

Gym churn is silent and expensive. Members drift away without dramatic exits — they just stop showing up. By the time you notice, they're already gone.

The cost of acquiring a new member is 5–7x higher than keeping an existing one. That makes retention the single most impactful lever for sustainable growth.

Griptonite gives you the tools to spot disengagement early and act before it becomes cancellation.

Challenges

Customer loyalty made simple (and fun)

Challenges are one of the most effective retention tools in Griptonite. They create structured goals, friendly competition, and visible progress — all tied to your gym.

Types of challenges

  • Volume-based (climb X routes)
  • Streak-based (visit X days in a row)
  • Grade-based (send at grade Y)
  • Zone-based (complete a circuit)

Challenge features

  • Gym-branded or Griptonite-wide
  • Prizes and rewards integration
  • Leaderboards and social sharing
  • Automated start/end and notifications

Less confusion, more confidence

Smart route tags: clarity beats grades alone

Grades don't tell the whole story. Griptonite enriches routes with smart tags that help climbers find the right climb for them — not just the "right grade." This reduces frustration (especially for newer climbers) and keeps people progressing in a way that feels achievable.

Printables — for when an app isn't the answer

Not everyone wants to engage with an app — and that's okay. Some climbers come to the gym specifically to switch off. Griptonite's printable templates communicate the essentials clearly, while keeping admin effort low for staff.

You get consistent, professional communication — without forcing digital engagement where it doesn't belong.

FAQs

Is the app free to climbers?

The standard app is free for climbers to find climbs and track progress. We do have a PRO subscription that adds a layer on top of the free app for features like personalised workouts and beta video analysis.

Do I have to use the route tags?

While tags reduce friction, climbers can also find and log climbs using the interactive gym maps within the app.

Can you check in with the same app to the gym?

Griptonite integrates with various front-desk software (FDS) to create a unified customer experience.

How does the app help with churn of new customers?

Our data shows that Griptonite users are 30% less likely to churn. We focus on the crucial first 30 minutes of a visit, providing a "soft landing" through easy navigation and achievable challenges.
